Dracula, spiritual warfare, and mirrors.

Bram Stoker was a genius.

I only just realized that Bram Stokers ‘Dracula,’ is a guide book for spiritual warfare. A masterpiece.

Here is the first big reason why. And it blew my mind.

Since I was a kid, I’ve been a fan of vampire movies.

The movies show us ways to identify vampires: their dislike of the crucifix, garlic, and they don’t appear in mirrors. And of course, the mortal danger that sunlight brings them.

Lets focus on the mirror.

Vampire lore tells us, that we can’t see them in mirrors.

And here is the big ah-ha: They can’t see themselves in mirrors either!

i.e. Vampires can’t self-reflect.

They don’t have the ability to see themselves and reflect on their part, in anything. They can’t self-reflect. I have to say, it blew my mind when this deeper meaning clicked in.

Dracula, one of the great narcissists. Along with all the other vampires.

Was Bram Stoker giving us a brilliant way to identify narcissistic behaviour?

In others, and in ourselves?

The rub is… that we all have blindspots, and I would argue, that most of us have some vampire in us.

It does not justify it. It does not make it ok.

So the real question is, are we willing to look in the mirror until we “see”? And then eradicate that “life-stealing” evil from our being?

It is literally stealing our spirit, the “life force” from us, and from the people around it.

It reminds me of the story about Rodin telling Rilke: “Go to the zoo, and look at an animal… until you see it.”

This whole “mirror” insight just floored me. It shifted my whole perspective on Dracula and what it’s really about.

So, I went and listened to the audiobook of Bram Stokers ‘Dracula’

It is a metaphysical masterpiece about spiritual warfare. Written in the late 1800’s and an instruction guide that is fully applicable today.

Reflect on that!
